What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Oban?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Oban about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Scotland. The National Health Service (NHS) provides free healthcare, including maternity services, to all UK residents. Register with a local GP (General Practitioner) as soon as you can. They will be your first point of contact for all health-related issues, including pregnancy. Oban has a local hospital, Lorn & Islands Hospital, which has a maternity unit. Make sure to visit the hospital and understand the facilities available. Prenatal care is very important. Regular check-ups with your GP or midwife will ensure that both you and your baby are healthy. Consider attending antenatal classes. These are a great way to prepare for childbirth and parenthood, and also a good way to meet other expectant parents in Oban. Scotland has a strong tradition of midwifery care. You may want to consider hiring a midwife for personalized care throughout your pregnancy and childbirth. Breastfeeding is highly encouraged in Scotland. There are numerous support groups and resources available if you need help or advice. Remember to apply for a Child Benefit once your baby is born. This is a state subsidy paid to parents or guardians of children under 16. Lastly, make sure to take time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings in Oban. The fresh air and peaceful environment can be very beneficial for both the mother and the baby," said a member in Oban, Scotland.
