What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Geelong?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Geelong about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to understand the healthcare system in Australia. The country has a mix of public and private healthcare, and as an expat, you may be eligible for the public healthcare system, Medicare, depending on your visa status. If you're not eligible for Medicare, you should consider getting private health insurance that covers maternity care. Some policies require you to hold the insurance for a certain period before you can claim maternity benefits, so plan ahead. Find a good obstetrician or midwife early on in your pregnancy. You can ask for recommendations from friends, colleagues, or local expat groups. Geelong has several hospitals with maternity units, including the University Hospital Geelong and St John of God Geelong Hospital. Visit the hospitals, meet the staff, and choose the one where you feel most comfortable. Consider taking prenatal classes. These can be a great way to prepare for childbirth and parenthood, and to meet other expectant parents in Geelong. If you're planning to work while pregnant, understand your rights. Australia has laws protecting the rights of pregnant women in the workplace, including the right to maternity leave. After the baby is born, you'll need to register the birth with the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. This is a legal requirement and must be done within 60 days of the birth. Finally, connect with other parents and expats in Geelong. They can provide invaluable advice, support, and friendship. There are many groups and communities, both online and offline, where you can meet people in a similar situation," explained one expat living in Geelong, Australia.
