What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Canberra?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Canberra about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to understand the healthcare system in Australia. The country has a mix of public and private healthcare, and as an expat, you may be eligible for the public healthcare system, Medicare, depending on your visa status. If you are eligible for Medicare, most of your prenatal, birth, and postnatal care will be covered. If not, you will need to have private health insurance or be prepared to pay for these services out of pocket. It's also important to find a good obstetrician or midwife early in your pregnancy. You can ask for recommendations from friends, colleagues, or local expat groups. Consider where you want to give birth. There are several hospitals in Canberra, both public and private, and some also offer birthing centres for a more natural birth experience. You should also familiarise yourself with Australian customs and practices around childbirth. For example, it's common in Australia for both parents to attend birthing classes, and many hospitals encourage skin-to-skin contact between the baby and both parents immediately after birth. If you're planning to work while pregnant, understand your rights and entitlements. Australia has laws protecting the rights of pregnant women in the workplace, and you may be entitled to maternity leave. Finally, connect with other expats who have had babies in Canberra. They can provide invaluable advice and support, and may be able to recommend specific doctors, hospitals, or services," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Canberra, Australia.
