What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Caye Caulker?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Caye Caulker about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Belize. While there are hospitals and clinics available, the standard of healthcare may not be as high as in your home country. Therefore, it's advisable to have a comprehensive health insurance plan that covers maternity care and potentially medical evacuation, in case of any complications. Secondly, consider hiring a local midwife or doula who can guide you through the process and provide valuable support during pregnancy and childbirth. They can also help you navigate the local healthcare system and communicate with medical staff if there's a language barrier. Thirdly, ensure you have all the necessary documentation for your baby. This includes registering the birth with both the local authorities in Belize and with your home country's embassy or consulate, to ensure your child has dual citizenship if applicable. Fourthly, be prepared for the climate. Caye Caulker is a tropical island, so ensure you have appropriate clothing and protection for your baby against the heat and sun. Lastly, try to connect with other expat families in Caye Caulker or wider Belize. They can provide invaluable advice, support and friendship during this exciting time in your life," wrote a member who made the move to Caye Caulker, Belize.
