What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Consejo?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Consejo about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Belize. While the country has a number of public and private hospitals, the standard of care may not be as high as in your home country. Therefore, it's advisable to have a comprehensive health insurance plan that covers maternity care and potentially medical evacuation, in case of complications. Secondly, prenatal care is crucial. Regular check-ups with a trusted healthcare provider can help ensure the health of both mother and baby. You may need to travel to a larger city for these appointments, as smaller towns like Consejo may not have the necessary facilities. Thirdly, consider the language barrier. While English is the official language of Belize, Spanish and Creole are also widely spoken. If you're not fluent in these languages, it might be beneficial to have a translator or a local friend who can help you communicate with medical staff. Fourthly, plan for the birth. Some expats choose to return to their home country for the delivery due to the higher standard of care. If you decide to give birth in Belize, make sure you have a birth plan in place and that your healthcare provider is fully aware of your wishes. Lastly, after the baby is born, you will need to register the birth with both the local authorities in Belize and with your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure the baby's dual citizenship. This process can take some time, so it's best to start as soon as possible. Remember, every pregnancy and birth is unique, so what works for one person may not work for another. Always consult with healthcare professionals and make the decisions that are best for you and your family," said a member in Consejo, Belize.
