What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Koh Rong?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Koh Rong about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Having a baby in Koh Rong, as an expat can be a unique experience, but it's important to be prepared and informed. Firstly, it's crucial to understand that healthcare facilities in Koh Rong are limited. For regular check-ups and emergencies, you may need to travel to the mainland, specifically to Sihanoukville or Phnom Penh, where there are better-equipped hospitals and clinics. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers both mother and baby, and that it includes medical evacuation, as you may need to be transported to a larger hospital in case of complications. Find a reliable and experienced doctor who is familiar with the healthcare system in Cambodia and can guide you through the process. It's also beneficial if they speak your language to avoid any miscommunication. Consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout the pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help navigate any cultural differences in birthing practices. Ensure you have all the necessary baby supplies, as certain items may not be readily available on the island. This includes items like diapers, baby clothes, and formula if you plan to bottle-feed. It's also important to understand the legal aspects of having a baby in Cambodia, such as registering the birth and obtaining a passport for your child. Consult with your embassy or consulate to understand the process. Lastly, be prepared for cultural differences and respect local customs and traditions related to pregnancy and childbirth. This can help you integrate better into the community and make the experience more enjoyable," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Koh Rong, Cambodia.
