What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Spanish Town?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Spanish Town about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in the British Virgin Islands. The main hospital in the territory is the Peebles Hospital in Road Town, Tortola, which is about a 30-minute drive from Spanish Town. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care and childbirth. The cost of healthcare can be high in the British Virgin Islands, especially for non-residents. Find a good obstetrician or midwife who you feel comfortable with. It's important to have a healthcare professional who understands your needs and can communicate effectively with you. Consider hiring a doula or birth coach to help you navigate the healthcare system and provide emotional support during pregnancy and childbirth. If you have specific birth preferences, such as a natural birth or water birth, discuss these with your healthcare provider early on. Not all facilities in the British Virgin Islands may be equipped to accommodate these preferences. Take prenatal classes if they are available. These can help you prepare for childbirth and parenthood, and are also a great way to meet other expectant parents. Ensure your passport and visa are up to date, and familiarize yourself with the process for registering the birth and obtaining a passport for your baby. Finally, take care of your mental health. Living abroad can be stressful, and pregnancy can add to this stress. Don't hesitate to seek help if you're feeling overwhelmed or anxious," remarked another expat who made the move to Spanish Town, the British Virgin Islands.
