What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Freiburg?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Freiburg about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the German healthcare system, which is known for its high standards. You should ensure that you have health insurance that covers maternity costs, as this will cover most, if not all, of your prenatal and postnatal care. Secondly, you should find a good gynecologist (Gynäkologe) and midwife (Hebamme) who can guide you through your pregnancy. Midwives in Germany play a crucial role in prenatal and postnatal care, and their services are covered by health insurance. Thirdly, consider taking prenatal classes, which are often offered in English. These classes can help you prepare for childbirth and parenthood, and are a great way to meet other expectant parents. Fourthly, be aware that German law requires all births to be registered within one week, so make sure you have all the necessary documents ready. This includes your passport, residence permit, and birth certificates of both parents. Fifthly, if you're not fluent in German, you might want to consider hiring a translator for your hospital visits and for the birth itself. While many doctors and nurses speak English, it can be comforting to have someone there who can translate for you in a stressful situation. Lastly, take advantage of the generous parental leave policies in Germany. Both parents are entitled to parental leave, which can be taken at the same time or separately. This can give you valuable time to bond with your new baby and adjust to your new life as parents," explained one expat living in Freiburg, Germany.
