What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Leipzig?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Leipzig about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the German healthcare system. Prenatal care and childbirth are covered by statutory health insurance in Germany, so make sure you have the necessary coverage. Secondly, find a good gynecologist or 'Frauenarzt' who speaks your language or English, as they will be your primary healthcare provider throughout your pregnancy. Thirdly, consider hiring a midwife or 'Hebamme'. In Germany, it's common to have a midwife who provides personal and continuous care throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period. Fourthly, learn about the maternity leave and parental benefits in Germany. The country has generous policies, including up to three years of parental leave and financial support. Fifthly, start looking for a pediatrician or 'Kinderarzt' early. Some pediatricians in Leipzig have long waiting lists, so it's best to find one well before your baby is born. Sixthly, if you're considering giving birth in a hospital, visit a few to get a feel for them. Leipzig has several hospitals with maternity wards. Seventhly, consider taking prenatal classes. They can be a great way to prepare for childbirth and parenthood, and to meet other expectant parents in Leipzig. Lastly, don't forget to register your newborn's birth at the local registry office or 'Standesamt'. In Germany, you must register a birth within one week. Remember, it's okay to ask for help and seek support. Moving to a new country and having a baby are both major life changes, and it's normal to feel overwhelmed at times," said another expat in Leipzig, Germany.
