What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Stuttgart?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Stuttgart about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the German healthcare system. Prenatal care and childbirth are covered by statutory health insurance in Germany, so make sure you have the necessary coverage. Secondly, consider hiring a midwife. In Germany, it's common to have a midwife who provides prenatal care, assists with the birth, and offers postnatal support. Thirdly, learn about the maternity leave and parental benefits in Germany. Mothers are entitled to a minimum of 14 weeks maternity leave and parents can receive parental allowance for up to 14 months. Fourthly, if you're not fluent in German, look for English-speaking doctors and midwives. Many medical professionals in Stuttgart speak English, but it's best to confirm this in advance. Fifthly, start looking for a pediatrician early. Pediatricians can get booked up quickly, so it's a good idea to start your search before the baby arrives. Lastly, connect with other expat parents. They can provide valuable advice and support, and may be able to recommend English-speaking doctors, midwives, and pediatricians," said another expat in Stuttgart, Germany.
