What advice do you have for expats having a baby in San Andres Island?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in San Andres Island about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Colombia. The country has a good standard of healthcare, but it's crucial to ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Secondly, you should find a reliable obstetrician or midwife who speaks your language, as communication is key during pregnancy and childbirth. Thirdly, consider taking prenatal classes to prepare for the birth and to meet other expectant parents. Fourthly, be aware that while San Andres Island is a beautiful location, it may not have the same level of medical facilities as larger cities in Colombia. Therefore, you may need to travel for certain tests or procedures. Fifthly, make sure you understand the legal requirements for registering the birth of your child in Colombia. This may involve paperwork in Spanish, so you may need assistance with translation. Lastly, try to embrace the local culture and traditions surrounding childbirth. This can make the experience more enriching and help you feel more integrated into the community," said a member in San Andres Island, Colombia.
