What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Salento?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Salento about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Colombia. The country has a good standard of healthcare, but it's crucial to ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Secondly, consider hiring a local doula or midwife who can guide you through the process and provide support during labor and delivery. They can also help navigate any language barriers that may arise. Thirdly, make sure to have all necessary documents ready for when the baby is born. This includes your passport, visa, and any other identification documents. The hospital will need these to register the birth. Fourthly, it's recommended to take prenatal classes, which are often available in English. These classes can help you prepare for childbirth and parenthood, and are a great way to meet other expectant parents in the expat community. Fifthly, be aware that Colombian culture may have different customs and traditions surrounding childbirth. It's important to respect these, but also to communicate your own wishes and preferences. Lastly, after the baby is born, you will need to register the birth with your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure the baby's citizenship. This process can take some time, so it's best to start as soon as possible. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging experience, but with the right preparation and support, it can also be a very rewarding one," wrote a member who made the move to Salento, Colombia.
