What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Manizales?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Manizales about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Colombia. Manizales has several good hospitals and clinics, but you should ensure you have adequate health insurance that covers maternity care. Secondly, consider hiring a local doula or midwife who can guide you through the process and provide support during labor and delivery. They can also help navigate any language barriers that may arise. Thirdly, it's recommended to learn some basic Spanish if you don't already speak it. While many doctors and nurses will speak English, not all hospital staff may be fluent. Fourthly, be aware of the cultural differences. Colombian culture places a lot of importance on family, and you may find that the whole family wants to be involved in the pregnancy and birth. Fifthly, make sure to register the birth with both the local authorities and your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure your child has dual citizenship if applicable. Lastly, take advantage of the local support networks. There are often groups for expat parents that can provide advice and support, as well as help you connect with other families in a similar situation," said another expat in Manizales, Colombia.
