What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Mikulov?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Mikulov about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Czech healthcare system. The Czech Republic has a high standard of healthcare, including maternity services, and most doctors and nurses speak English. However, it's always beneficial to learn some basic Czech medical terms. Ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. If you are employed in the Czech Republic, you will be covered by the public health insurance system, which includes maternity care. If not, you will need to arrange private health insurance. Choose a hospital or birthing center in advance and make sure you understand their policies and procedures. In Mikulov, the nearest hospitals with maternity wards are in Brno or B?eclav. Consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help bridge any language or cultural gaps. Register the birth with the local registry office within three days of the birth. If you or your partner are not Czech citizens, you will also need to register the birth with your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure your child's citizenship rights. Breastfeeding in public is generally accepted in the Czech Republic, but it's always a good idea to use discretion and respect local customs. Lastly, take advantage of the parental leave policies in the Czech Republic. Maternity leave is typically 28 weeks, and parental leave can be taken until the child is three years old. This can be a great opportunity to bond with your new baby and adjust to life as a parent," said another expat in Mikulov, Czechia.
