What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Falmouth?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Falmouth about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Antigua & Barbuda. The Mount St. John's Medical Centre in St. John's is the main hospital on the island and offers maternity services. However, it's advisable to also consider private healthcare options for more personalized care. Ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Check if your policy covers prenatal and postnatal care, childbirth, and any potential complications. If your insurance doesn't cover these, you may need to pay out of pocket or consider getting additional coverage. Find a good obstetrician or midwife who you feel comfortable with. You can ask for recommendations from other expats, local friends, or your general practitioner. It's important to have regular check-ups throughout your pregnancy. Consider taking prenatal classes. These can help you prepare for childbirth and parenthood, and it's also a great way to meet other expectant parents in Falmouth. If you're planning to give birth in a hospital, visit the hospital beforehand to familiarize yourself with the facilities and procedures. This can help you feel more comfortable and prepared when the time comes. Ensure that your baby's birth is registered properly. In Antigua & Barbuda, a baby's birth should be registered within 14 days at the local registrar. As an expat, you may also need to register the birth with your home country's embassy or consulate. Finally, take care of your mental health. Moving to a new country and having a baby are both major life changes, and it's normal to feel overwhelmed. Don't hesitate to seek support from healthcare professionals, friends, family, or support groups if you need it," commented one expat who made the move to Falmouth, Antigua & Barbuda.
