What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Zadar?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Zadar about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Croatia. The country has a universal healthcare system, but private healthcare is also available. You should ensure that your health insurance covers maternity costs in Croatia. Secondly, you should find a good obstetrician and hospital in Zadar. You can ask for recommendations from other expats or locals. It's also advisable to visit the hospital where you plan to give birth to familiarize yourself with the facilities and procedures. Thirdly, learn about the maternity leave policies in Croatia. The country has generous maternity leave policies, but they may differ for expats. You should check with your employer or the Croatian labor department for accurate information. Fourthly, consider hiring a doula or midwife. They can provide additional support and guidance during pregnancy and childbirth. However, you should ensure that they are certified and speak a language you are comfortable with. Fifthly, learn some basic Croatian phrases related to pregnancy and childbirth. While many doctors and nurses speak English, there may be times when you need to communicate with non-English speaking staff. Lastly, connect with other expats who have had babies in Zadar. They can provide valuable advice and support. There are several online forums and social media groups where you can connect with other expats in Croatia," explained one expat living in Zadar, Croatia.
