What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Santiago de los Caballeros?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Santiago de los Caballeros about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in the Dominican Republic. Public healthcare is available, but many expats opt for private healthcare due to its higher quality. Make sure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Secondly, you should find a good obstetrician who speaks your language or with whom you feel comfortable communicating. You can ask for recommendations from other expats or from your embassy. Thirdly, prenatal care is essential. Regular check-ups and ultrasounds are standard procedure in the Dominican Republic, so make sure you attend all your appointments. Fourthly, consider where you want to give birth. Many expats choose to give birth in private hospitals in Santiago de los Caballeros due to the higher standard of care. Research and visit potential hospitals before making a decision. Fifthly, be aware that the Dominican Republic has a high rate of C-sections, especially in private hospitals. If you prefer a natural birth, discuss this with your doctor and make sure your wishes are respected. Sixthly, after the birth, your baby will be eligible for Dominican citizenship. However, you should also register the birth with your home country's embassy to ensure your child has dual citizenship. Lastly, parenting practices may differ in the Dominican Republic. Be open to learning from local customs, but also feel free to maintain your own cultural practices. It's also a good idea to connect with other expat parents for support and advice," said another expat in Santiago de los Caballeros, the Dominican Republic.
