What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Canoa?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Canoa about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Ecuador. Public healthcare is available, but many expats opt for private healthcare due to its higher standard of care. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Some insurance companies may have a waiting period for maternity coverage, so plan accordingly. Find a reputable obstetrician and hospital for your prenatal care and delivery. You may need to travel to a larger city for more specialized care, as Canoa is a small town. Learn Spanish or have a translator, as English is not widely spoken among medical professionals in Ecuador. Understand the cultural differences in pregnancy and childbirth practices. In Ecuador, it's common for women to return to their parents' home for the birth and postpartum period. Prepare for the possibility of a C-section, as Ecuador has one of the highest rates of cesarean sections in the world. Ensure your newborn's paperwork for citizenship and passports is in order. If one parent is a U.S. citizen, the child is typically eligible for dual citizenship. Finally, connect with other expat parents in Ecuador. They can provide valuable advice, support, and friendship during this exciting time," explained one expat living in Canoa, Ecuador.
