What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Puerto Rico?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Puerto Rico about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Ecuador. The country has both public and private healthcare, with the latter often providing a higher standard of care. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Some insurance companies may require a waiting period before maternity coverage is available, so plan accordingly. Find a reputable obstetrician or midwife who speaks your language. Communication is key during pregnancy and childbirth, so it's important to find a healthcare provider you can communicate with effectively. Consider hiring a doula or birth coach who can provide emotional support and help navigate the healthcare system. Research the local customs and practices around childbirth. In Ecuador, it's common for women to give birth in a hospital, but home births are also an option. Prepare for the possibility of a C-section. Ecuador has one of the highest rates of C-sections in the world, so discuss this possibility with your healthcare provider. Ensure your newborn's paperwork is in order. Your baby will need a birth certificate from the local registry and you'll need to report the birth to your home country's embassy or consulate to secure citizenship. Finally, connect with other expat parents in Ecuador. They can provide invaluable advice and support, and may be able to recommend specific doctors, hospitals, or services," said another expat in Puerto Rico, Ecuador.
