What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Namur?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Namur about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Belgian healthcare system. Belgium has a high standard of healthcare and most hospitals in Namur will have English-speaking staff. However, it's always a good idea to learn some basic French phrases related to pregnancy and childbirth, as French is the main language spoken in Namur. Secondly, you should register your pregnancy with your local commune as soon as possible. This will ensure that you receive all the necessary prenatal care and benefits. You will also need to choose a hospital or birthing center for the delivery. It's recommended to visit a few different places to find one that suits your needs and preferences. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife. They can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help you navigate the Belgian healthcare system and communicate with medical staff. Fourthly, make sure you understand the maternity leave policies in Belgium. If you are working, you are entitled to 15 weeks of maternity leave. Your employer is required to continue paying your salary for the first 30 days, after which you will receive benefits from your health insurance fund. Lastly, after the baby is born, you will need to register the birth with your local commune within 15 days. This is a legal requirement and failure to do so can result in fines. You will also need to apply for a passport for your baby if you plan to travel outside of Belgium," commented one expat who made the move to Namur, Belgium.
