What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Ghent?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Ghent about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to understand that healthcare in Belgium is of a high standard, so you can expect good prenatal and postnatal care. You should register with a local doctor or midwife as soon as you know you're pregnant. Belgium has a mandatory health insurance system, so make sure you're covered. If you're working in Belgium, your employer should provide this. If not, you'll need to arrange it yourself. You'll also need to decide where you want to give birth. In Belgium, most births take place in hospitals, but home births are also possible. Belgium has a system of 'kraamzorg' or postnatal home care, where a trained nurse visits you at home after the birth to help with the baby and give advice. This can be very helpful, especially if you're new to parenthood. You should also be aware that you'll need to register the birth with the local town hall within 15 days. If you're not a Belgian citizen, you'll also need to inform your embassy or consulate. Belgium has a generous maternity and paternity leave system, so make sure you understand your rights and take full advantage of this. Finally, Ghent is a family-friendly city with plenty of parks, playgrounds and activities for children. It's also a very international city, so you should be able to find support groups and meet other expat parents," commented one expat who made the move to Ghent, Belgium.
