What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Saint-Malo?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Saint-Malo about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the French healthcare system, which is one of the best in the world. Pregnant women in France are well cared for, with regular check-ups and ultrasounds as part of the standard prenatal care. Ensure that you have the right health insurance. If you are working in France, you will be covered by the French social security system, which covers most of the costs related to pregnancy and childbirth. If not, you may need to look into private health insurance options. Find a good obstetrician or midwife who speaks your language, if you're not comfortable with French. Saint-Malo, being a popular tourist destination, has many English-speaking doctors. Consider taking prenatal classes. They are a great way to meet other expectant parents and learn more about the birthing process and caring for a newborn. Some classes may be offered in English. Plan your maternity leave. France has very generous maternity leave policies, so make sure you understand your rights. Start looking into childcare options early. In France, there are various options including crèches (daycare centers), assistantes maternelles (registered childminders), and nounous (nannies). Spaces in crèches can be particularly hard to come by, so it's best to get on waiting lists as soon as possible. Finally, try to embrace the French culture and way of life. This includes their attitudes towards pregnancy and childbirth, which tend to be quite relaxed. The French believe in a balanced lifestyle and this extends to their approach to parenting as well," wrote a member who made the move to Saint-Malo, France.
