What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Naxos?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Naxos about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Greece. The country has both public and private healthcare, and as an expat, you may be eligible for public healthcare if you are a legal resident and contribute to the social security system. Secondly, you should find a good obstetrician or midwife who speaks your language. This will make your prenatal visits and the delivery process much easier. Thirdly, consider taking prenatal classes. These can be a great way to meet other expectant parents and learn about the birthing process in Greece. Fourthly, make sure you understand the paperwork involved. You will need to register the birth with the local municipality and your home country's embassy or consulate. Fifthly, if you plan to give birth in a hospital, visit the hospital beforehand to familiarize yourself with the facilities and procedures. Lastly, be aware that Greek culture places a lot of importance on family. You may find that local customs and traditions around childbirth are different from what you're used to. Be open to these differences and embrace the support of your new community. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging but rewarding experience. Take the time to prepare and educate yourself, and don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it," said a member in Naxos, Greece.
