What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Nafplio?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Nafplio about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Greek healthcare system. Greece has a mix of public and private healthcare, and as an expat, you may have access to both. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Some insurance policies may not cover pregnancy and childbirth, so it's crucial to check this in advance. Find a good local doctor or midwife who speaks your language. Communication is key during pregnancy and childbirth, so it's important to find a healthcare professional you can communicate with effectively. Consider hiring a doula. A doula can provide emotional and physical support during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. They can also help navigate the healthcare system and advocate for your needs. Research local hospitals and birthing centers in Nafplio. Visit them in advance to get a feel for the environment and the staff. Ask about their policies on things like pain management, birthing positions, and breastfeeding. Learn about Greek customs and traditions related to pregnancy and childbirth. This can help you understand what to expect and how to navigate cultural differences. Take a childbirth education class. This can help you prepare for childbirth and understand your options. Some hospitals in Greece offer these classes in English. Prepare for the paperwork. In Greece, you'll need to register the birth within 10 days at the local municipality. You'll need your passports, your marriage certificate if applicable, and the hospital birth certificate. Finally, build a support network. Connect with other expats who have had babies in Greece, join local parenting groups, and don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it. Having a baby in a foreign country can be challenging, but with the right preparation and support, it can also be a wonderful experience," explained one expat living in Nafplio, Greece.
