What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Rethymno?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Rethymno about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Greek healthcare system. Greece has a mix of public and private healthcare, and as an expat, you may be eligible for public healthcare if you are a legal resident and contribute to the social security system. Secondly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can guide you through the process and provide support during labor and delivery. They can also help you navigate the healthcare system and communicate with doctors and nurses if you're not fluent in Greek. Thirdly, make sure to register the birth with both the local municipality and your home country's embassy or consulate. This will ensure that your child has dual citizenship and can access services in both countries. Fourthly, it's a good idea to join local expat groups or online forums. They can provide valuable advice and support, and may be able to recommend English-speaking doctors or hospitals. Lastly, remember to take time to enjoy the experience. Having a baby in a foreign country can be challenging, but it's also an opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture and create unique memories," remarked another expat in Rethymno, Greece.
