What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Patras?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Patras about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Greek healthcare system. Greece has a mix of public and private healthcare, and as an expat, you may be eligible for public healthcare if you are a legal resident and contribute to the social security system. Secondly, you should find a good obstetrician. You can ask for recommendations from other expats or locals, or search online. Make sure the doctor speaks a language you're comfortable with, as communication is crucial during this period. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife. They can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. Fourthly, learn about the local customs and traditions related to pregnancy and childbirth. This can help you understand what to expect and how to navigate the system. Fifthly, make sure you understand the paperwork involved. You will need to register the birth with both the local authorities and your home country's embassy or consulate. Lastly, take advantage of local resources. There may be prenatal classes, support groups, or other resources available to you. Remember, it's okay to ask for help and seek out support. Having a baby in a foreign country can be challenging, but with the right preparation and resources, it can also be a rewarding experience," said another expat in Patras, Greece.
