What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Taormina?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Taormina about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Italian healthcare system. Italy has a high standard of healthcare and pregnant women are well cared for. However, the system can be complex and bureaucratic, so it's worth doing your research and understanding your rights and entitlements. Secondly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who speaks both English and Italian. This can be a great help in navigating the healthcare system, understanding medical terminology, and advocating for your wishes during labor and delivery. Thirdly, make sure you have all the necessary paperwork in order. This includes your Italian health insurance card, your codice fiscale (tax code), and any other documents required by the hospital or birthing center. Fourthly, be aware that Italian hospitals can be quite traditional in their approach to childbirth. If you have specific wishes for your birth plan, such as wanting a water birth or to avoid certain interventions, it's important to discuss these with your healthcare provider well in advance. Fifthly, consider taking Italian language classes if you're not already fluent. While many doctors and nurses speak English, not all hospital staff may be able to communicate in English, and it can be helpful to understand what's being said around you. Lastly, take advantage of the support networks available to you. There are many expat groups and online forums where you can connect with other parents-to-be, share experiences, and get advice. This can be a great source of comfort and reassurance when you're far from home and navigating a new system," remarked another expat in Taormina, Italy.
