What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Woodlands?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Woodlands about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to understand that healthcare in Singapore is of a high standard, but it can be expensive. Therefore, ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity costs. Secondly, familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Singapore. There are both public and private hospitals, with the latter being more expensive. However, private hospitals may offer more personalized care and shorter waiting times. Thirdly, start looking for a suitable obstetrician or gynaecologist early on. You can ask for recommendations from friends, colleagues, or online expat forums. Fourthly, consider taking prenatal classes. These can be a great way to prepare for childbirth and to meet other expectant parents in Woodlands or other parts of Singapore. Fifthly, if you have specific birthing plans or preferences, discuss these with your healthcare provider well in advance. This could include things like natural birth, water birth, or the use of pain relief during labor. Sixthly, make sure you understand the rules about maternity leave in Singapore. If you're working, you may be entitled to paid leave before and after the birth. Lastly, after the baby is born, you'll need to register the birth within 14 days. If you're not a Singaporean citizen, you'll also need to apply for a Dependant's Pass for your baby. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging experience, but with the right preparation and support, it can also be a very rewarding one," remarked another expat who made the move to Woodlands, Singapore.
