What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Oracabessa?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Oracabessa about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Jamaica. The country has both public and private healthcare facilities, with the private ones offering a higher standard of care. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care and childbirth. Some insurance companies may have a waiting period for maternity coverage, so plan accordingly. Find a reputable obstetrician and pediatrician in Oracabessa or nearby cities like Ocho Rios or Kingston. You can ask for recommendations from other expats or locals. Prenatal care is crucial for the health of both the mother and the baby. Regular check-ups and ultrasounds should be part of your pregnancy journey. Consider taking childbirth and parenting classes. These can help you prepare for labor, delivery, and taking care of a newborn. If you prefer a home birth or a birth at a birthing center, ensure you have a certified midwife or doula. However, be aware that emergency medical services may not be as readily available as in your home country. Ensure your newborn's paperwork, such as birth certificate and passport, is in order. This is especially important if you plan to travel back to your home country with your baby. Breastfeeding is widely accepted in Jamaica. However, if you prefer formula feeding, you may want to bring your preferred brand from your home country as it may not be available in Jamaica. Lastly, embrace the local culture and community. Jamaicans are generally very family-oriented and welcoming, and they can provide invaluable support and advice," remarked another expat in Oracabessa, Jamaica.
