What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Hiroshima?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Hiroshima about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Japanese healthcare system. Japan has a universal healthcare system, so you will need to register for health insurance. Prenatal care and childbirth are covered by health insurance, but there may be some out-of-pocket costs. Secondly, find a hospital or clinic that suits your needs. Hiroshima has many hospitals and clinics, some of which offer services in English. It's recommended to choose a hospital or clinic that you feel comfortable with and that understands your needs and preferences. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who speaks your language. They can provide emotional support and help you navigate the healthcare system. They can also help with communication between you and the medical staff. Fourthly, learn about the customs and traditions related to childbirth in Japan. For example, it's common for the mother to stay in the hospital for a few days after giving birth. Also, there's a tradition called "satogaeri" where the mother goes to her parents' home for a month or so after giving birth. Fifthly, make sure to register the birth of your baby at the local city hall. You will need to do this within 14 days of the birth. You will also need to apply for your baby's passport and visa if you plan to travel outside of Japan. Lastly, connect with other expat parents in Hiroshima. They can provide advice, support, and friendship. There are several online forums and social media groups where you can connect with other expat parents," remarked another expat who made the move to Hiroshima, Japan.
