What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Gwangju?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Gwangju about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Korea. The country has a high standard of healthcare and many doctors and nurses speak English, especially in larger cities like Gwangju. Secondly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and childbirth. They can help navigate the healthcare system and communicate with medical staff. Thirdly, make sure to understand your health insurance coverage. Most employers in Korea provide health insurance, but it's important to check what is covered, especially in relation to pregnancy and childbirth. Fourthly, join local expat groups or online forums. They can provide invaluable advice and support, as well as recommendations for English-speaking doctors and hospitals. Fifthly, learn some basic Korean medical terms. While many doctors speak English, not all hospital staff may be fluent. Knowing some basic terms can help in emergencies. Sixthly, explore the option of giving birth in a birthing center instead of a hospital. These centers often provide a more natural and relaxed environment for childbirth. Lastly, be aware of postnatal care practices in Korea. It's common for new mothers to stay in a postnatal care center for a week or two after giving birth, where they receive help with baby care and recovery. Remember, every pregnancy and birth is unique, so it's important to find what works best for you and your family," commented one expat who made the move to Gwangju, Korea.
