What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Busan?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Busan about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Korea. The country has a high standard of medical care, including maternity services, but understanding how it works will help you navigate it more easily. Secondly, consider hiring a doula or a birth coach who can provide emotional and physical support during childbirth. They can also help bridge any language or cultural gaps. Thirdly, learn some basic Korean medical terms or have a translation app handy. While many doctors and nurses in Busan speak English, not all medical staff may be fluent. Fourthly, research and choose a hospital or birthing center that suits your needs and preferences. Some expats prefer international clinics or hospitals where English is widely spoken, while others opt for local Korean hospitals for a more immersive experience. Fifthly, understand the cultural differences. In Korea, postpartum care is taken very seriously and there are many traditions and practices associated with it, such as the "sitting month" where new mothers rest and recover for a month after giving birth. Sixthly, make sure your visa and paperwork are in order. Your baby will need a birth certificate and passport, and you may need to update your visa status. Lastly, connect with other expat parents in Busan. They can provide valuable advice, support, and friendship. There are several online forums and social media groups where you can connect with other expat parents," said another expat in Busan, Korea.
