What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Daejeon?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Daejeon about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Korea. The country has a high standard of medical care, including maternity services, but understanding how it works will help you navigate it more easily. Secondly, consider hiring a doula or a birth coach who can provide emotional and physical support during childbirth. They can also help bridge any language or cultural gaps. Thirdly, learn some basic Korean medical terms or have a translation app handy. While many doctors and nurses speak English, not all medical staff may be fluent. Fourthly, research and choose a hospital or birthing center that suits your needs and preferences. Some expats prefer international clinics or hospitals where English is widely spoken, while others opt for local hospitals for a more Korean experience. Fifthly, understand the cultural differences. In Korea, postpartum care is taken very seriously and there are many traditions and practices associated with it, such as the "sitting month" where new mothers rest and recover for a month after giving birth. Sixthly, make sure to register the birth with both the local Korean authorities and your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure your child's dual citizenship. Lastly, connect with other expat parents in Daejeon. They can provide valuable advice, support, and friendship during this exciting time in your life," remarked another expat who made the move to Daejeon, Korea.
