What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Daegu?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Daegu about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Korea. The country has a high standard of medical care, including obstetrics and gynecology, but understanding how the system works will make the process smoother. Secondly, consider hiring a doula or birth coach who speaks both English and Korean. They can help navigate the language barrier during prenatal appointments and the birth itself. Thirdly, research and choose a hospital that suits your needs and preferences. Some hospitals in Daegu cater specifically to foreigners and offer services in English. Fourthly, be aware that prenatal and postnatal practices may differ from those in your home country. For example, many Korean women participate in "sanhujori", a traditional postpartum care period. Fifthly, ensure you understand the legal requirements for registering the birth of your child. This will include obtaining a birth certificate and potentially reporting the birth to your home country's embassy. Lastly, try to connect with other expat parents in Daegu. They can offer advice, support, and share their own experiences, which can be invaluable," remarked another expat who made the move to Daegu, Korea.
