What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Sheung Wan?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Sheung Wan about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Hong Kong. Public healthcare is of a high standard and is affordable, but it can be crowded and may not offer the same level of comfort and privacy as private healthcare. Secondly, consider hiring a private obstetrician who can provide personalized care throughout your pregnancy. This can be expensive, but many expats find it worthwhile for the peace of mind it provides. Thirdly, start looking for a suitable hospital early in your pregnancy. The public hospitals in Sheung Wan, such as Queen Mary Hospital, are well-equipped and staffed by experienced doctors, but they can be very busy. Private hospitals offer more comfort and privacy, but they are more expensive. Fourthly, consider hiring a doula or a midwife. They can provide valuable support and advice throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. Fifthly, join expat groups or online forums where you can connect with other expat parents in Sheung Wan. They can provide valuable advice and support, and may be able to recommend doctors, hospitals, and other resources. Lastly, make sure you understand the legal requirements for registering the birth of your baby in Hong Kong. You will need to register the birth within 42 days at the Births and Deaths General Register Office. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging experience, but with the right preparation and support, it can also be a rewarding one," wrote a member who made the move to Sheung Wan, Hong Kong.
