What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Kuala Lumpur?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Kuala Lumpur about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"If you approach your doctor with your birth plan and know what kind of experience you want, they will try to accommodate it. Also, find out the OB's c-section rate and episiotomy rate. Malaysia is a very c-section prone country, but there are doctors who will be happy to have someone who is trying to deliver vaginally and non-medicated. Do come to KL, though. Not sure what the medical service is like elsewhere," remarked another expat who made the move to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

"1. Make sure to research the healthcare system in Malaysia and find a doctor or midwife that you trust and feel comfortable with. 2. Consider taking a childbirth class to help you prepare for the birth. 3. Make sure to have a plan for postpartum care, such as a doula or postpartum nurse. 4. Consider joining a local expat group or online forum to connect with other expat parents who can provide support and advice. 5. Make sure to research the laws and regulations regarding birth certificates and other paperwork that may be required. 6. Have a plan for childcare and other support services that may be needed after the baby is born. 7. Take advantage of the many cultural and recreational activities available in Kuala Lumpur to help you and your family adjust to life in a new country," explained one expat living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
