What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Saint-Esprit?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Saint-Esprit about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Martinique. The island is an overseas department of France, so the healthcare system is similar to that in mainland France. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. The cost of having a baby in Martinique can be high without insurance. Find a good obstetrician and hospital for your prenatal care and delivery. The main hospital in Martinique is the University Hospital of Martinique in Fort-de-France, which has a maternity ward. Learn some French if you don't already speak it. While some doctors and nurses may speak English, many will not. Being able to communicate in French will make your experience much easier. Consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. Prepare for the climate. Martinique is a tropical island, so it can be hot and humid. Make sure you stay hydrated and take steps to stay cool, especially if you're pregnant during the summer months. Understand the cultural norms around childbirth in Martinique. For example, it's common for women to give birth without an epidural, although they are available if you want one. Finally, make sure you have all the necessary paperwork in order for your baby's birth certificate and passport. As Martinique is a part of France, your baby will be eligible for French citizenship," wrote a member who made the move to Saint-Esprit, Martinique.
