What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Sainte-Luce?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Sainte-Luce about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Martinique. The island has a high standard of healthcare, with many doctors speaking English. However, it's always beneficial to learn some basic French medical terms. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. The cost of having a baby in Martinique can be high without insurance. Check if your policy covers prenatal and postnatal care, as well as pediatric care for your newborn. Find a good obstetrician or midwife early in your pregnancy. You can ask for recommendations from other expats or your local doctor. Make sure they are someone you feel comfortable with and who understands your needs and preferences. Consider taking prenatal classes. These can be a great way to prepare for childbirth and to meet other expectant parents. Some hospitals in Martinique offer these classes in English. Plan your hospital stay in advance. Martinique has both public and private hospitals, and the standard of care is generally high. However, private hospitals may offer more comfort and privacy. Prepare all the necessary paperwork for your baby's birth certificate and passport. This can be a complex process, especially if you are not a French citizen. It's advisable to start this process well before your due date. Finally, embrace the local culture and traditions. Having a baby in a foreign country can be a wonderful experience if you are open to new experiences and willing to adapt to the local way of life," remarked another expat who made the move to Sainte-Luce, Martinique.
