What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Zihuatanejo?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Zihuatanejo about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Zihuatanejo. The city has both public and private hospitals, but private hospitals often provide a higher standard of care. Ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care and childbirth. If your insurance doesn't cover these costs, you may need to pay out of pocket, which can be expensive. Find a good obstetrician or midwife who speaks your language, as this will make communication easier during your pregnancy and delivery. Consider taking prenatal classes, which can help you prepare for childbirth and parenthood. These classes may be available in English or Spanish. Make sure you understand the paperwork involved in registering the birth of your child. In Mexico, you'll need to register the birth within 180 days to ensure your child's citizenship. If you plan to return to your home country after the birth, check the requirements for obtaining a passport for your newborn. This process can take several weeks, so it's best to start as soon as possible. Finally, connect with other expats who have had babies in Zihuatanejo. They can provide valuable advice and support during this exciting time," remarked another expat who made the move to Zihuatanejo, Mexico.
