What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Maastricht?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Maastricht about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to understand that the healthcare system in the Netherlands is of high quality and very accessible. However, it's crucial to have health insurance, as it's mandatory for everyone living in the country. Secondly, you should familiarize yourself with the Dutch healthcare system. Prenatal care is usually handled by a midwife unless there are complications, in which case a gynecologist will take over. Thirdly, it's recommended to start looking for a midwife as soon as you find out you're pregnant. You can ask for recommendations from friends, colleagues, or your general practitioner. Fourthly, consider taking prenatal classes. These are a great way to prepare for childbirth and parenthood, and it's also a good opportunity to meet other expectant parents in Maastricht. Fifthly, if you're not fluent in Dutch, look for healthcare providers who speak English. Many Dutch healthcare professionals are multilingual, so you should be able to find someone who can communicate with you effectively. Sixthly, plan your maternity leave. The Netherlands has generous maternity leave policies, so make sure you understand your rights and plan accordingly. Lastly, after the baby is born, you'll need to register the birth at the local municipality within three days. It's also a good idea to get your baby's health insurance sorted as soon as possible. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a daunting experience, but with the right preparation and support, it can also be a very rewarding one," explained one expat living in Maastricht, The Netherlands.
