What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Arnhem?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Arnhem about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to understand that the healthcare system in the Netherlands is of high quality and very accessible. However, it's crucial to have health insurance, as it's mandatory for everyone living in the country, including expats. When you find out you're pregnant, the first step is to visit a midwife (verloskundige) or your general practitioner who will guide you through the process. The midwife will be your primary source of care throughout your pregnancy, and they usually speak English. In the Netherlands, home births are quite common, but you can choose to give birth in a hospital or birthing center if you prefer. Discuss your birth plan with your midwife, including your preferences for pain relief and other aspects of labor and delivery. Prenatal classes are available and are a great way to prepare for childbirth and parenting. They can also be a good way to meet other expectant parents in Arnhem. Register your pregnancy with your health insurance company to ensure all your medical costs related to the pregnancy and birth are covered. You should also register your baby with the local municipality within three days of the birth. This is usually done by the father or partner, but if they can't do it, the mother or someone else who was present at the birth can register the baby. If you're working in the Netherlands, you're entitled to maternity leave. Make sure to inform your employer about your pregnancy at least three weeks before you want your maternity leave to start. Finally, it's important to start looking for childcare early if you plan to use it, as there can be waiting lists. There are different types of childcare available in Arnhem, including daycare centers, childminders, and after-school care," commented one expat who made the move to Arnhem, The Netherlands.
