What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Noordwijk?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Noordwijk about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Dutch healthcare system. Prenatal care in the Netherlands is typically handled by a midwife, unless there are complications. You should register with a local midwife practice as soon as you know you're pregnant. Secondly, consider taking Dutch language classes if you're not already fluent. While many Dutch people speak English, understanding the local language can make medical appointments and hospital visits less stressful. Thirdly, look into your health insurance coverage. The Dutch healthcare system is insurance-based, and certain services may not be covered. Make sure you understand what your insurance will and won't cover in terms of prenatal care, childbirth, and postnatal care. Fourthly, research local hospitals and birthing centers. In the Netherlands, home births are common, but you may prefer a hospital birth. Tour local facilities and ask about their policies and procedures. Fifthly, consider hiring a doula. A doula can provide emotional support and help you navigate the Dutch healthcare system. Sixthly, connect with other expat parents. They can provide advice, support, and recommendations based on their own experiences. Lastly, familiarize yourself with Dutch customs and practices around childbirth. For example, it's traditional to announce the birth of a baby with a card and to serve beschuit met muisjes, a type of biscuit with aniseed sprinkles, to visitors," wrote a member who made the move to Noordwijk, The Netherlands.
