What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Christchurch?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Christchurch about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to understand the healthcare system in New Zealand. The country has a high standard of healthcare and maternity services are free for residents and certain permit holders. As an expat, you should check your eligibility for these services or ensure you have adequate health insurance. Secondly, you should familiarize yourself with the local customs and practices around childbirth. New Zealand has a strong focus on natural birth and breastfeeding, but ultimately, the choice is yours. Thirdly, consider hiring a midwife. In New Zealand, midwives are the lead maternity carers and they provide a range of services from prenatal care to six weeks post-birth support. Fourthly, it's a good idea to join local parenting groups or expat communities. They can provide valuable advice, support, and friendship during this exciting but challenging time. Fifthly, if you're planning to work after the baby is born, look into your options for childcare. New Zealand offers a variety of childcare services, from daycare centers to home-based care. Lastly, make sure you understand the legal aspects of having a baby in New Zealand, such as registering the birth and obtaining a passport for your child. It's also worth noting that New Zealand has strong laws protecting the rights of children and parents," remarked another expat in Christchurch, New Zealand.
