What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Puerto Galera?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Puerto Galera about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in the Philippines. While Puerto Galera is a beautiful location, it's a small town and may not have the same level of medical facilities as larger cities. You may need to travel to a larger city for prenatal care and delivery. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Check if your insurance covers both mother and baby post-delivery, as well as any potential complications. Find a reputable obstetrician and pediatrician. You may need to travel to Manila or another larger city for regular check-ups. It's also a good idea to have a pediatrician lined up for after the baby is born. Consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help navigate any cultural or language barriers you may encounter. Learn about the local customs and traditions related to pregnancy and childbirth. The Philippines has a rich cultural heritage and understanding these traditions can help you feel more connected to the community. Ensure your home is ready for the baby. This includes setting up a nursery and making sure you have all the necessary baby supplies. Keep in mind that certain items may not be readily available in Puerto Galera and may need to be purchased in a larger city or online. Plan for the birth certificate and passport process. As an expat, there will be additional paperwork to ensure your baby's citizenship and travel documents are in order. Lastly, connect with other expat parents or join local parenting groups. They can provide invaluable advice, support, and friendship during this exciting time in your life," said another expat in Puerto Galera, Philippines.
