What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Siargao?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Siargao about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to find a reliable healthcare provider. Siargao is a small island and may not have the same level of medical facilities as larger cities in the Philippines. You may need to travel to a larger city for prenatal care and delivery. Secondly, ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Medical costs can add up quickly, especially if complications arise. Thirdly, familiarize yourself with the local customs and traditions related to pregnancy and childbirth. The Philippines has a rich cultural heritage and respecting local customs can help you integrate better into the community. Fourthly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help navigate any language barriers. Fifthly, make sure you have a support network. Being an expat can be isolating, especially during a major life event like having a baby. Reach out to other expats, join local groups, or connect with family and friends back home. Lastly, plan for the future. This includes considering citizenship options for your child, planning for their education, and ensuring they have access to necessary healthcare," wrote a member who made the move to Siargao, Philippines.
