What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Al-Ahsa?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Al-Ahsa about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Al-Ahsa. The country has both public and private healthcare, with the latter often being the preferred choice for expats due to shorter waiting times and English-speaking staff. Ensure that your health insurance covers maternity costs. If you are employed, check with your employer about the maternity benefits included in your package. Find a good obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) who you are comfortable with. It's advisable to choose a doctor who speaks your language to avoid any communication barriers. Prenatal care is essential for the health of both the mother and the baby. Regular check-ups, ultrasounds, and tests should be part of your pregnancy journey. Saudi Arabia has strict laws and customs, so it's important to respect them. For instance, women are required to dress modestly, covering their arms, legs, and hair when in public. Prepare for the birth by attending prenatal classes if they are available. These classes can provide valuable information about childbirth and caring for a newborn. If you have specific birth plans or preferences, discuss them with your doctor well in advance. This could include your wish for a natural birth, pain relief options, or who you want to be present during the delivery. After the birth, the baby will be given a birth certificate from the hospital. You will need this to register the birth with your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure your child's citizenship rights. Breastfeeding in public is not common in Saudi Arabia, so it's advisable to plan ahead or find private areas if you need to feed your baby while out. Lastly, build a support network. Living abroad can be challenging, especially when you're expecting a baby. Connect with other expat parents or join local parenting groups for advice and companionship," said another expat in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia.
