What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Al Ula?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Al Ula about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Saudi Arabia. The country has both public and private healthcare, and while public healthcare is free for Saudi nationals, expats will need to have health insurance to cover any medical costs. Ensure that you have a good health insurance plan that covers maternity care. This should include prenatal check-ups, delivery, and postnatal care. Find a good hospital or clinic for your prenatal check-ups and delivery. Al Ula may not have as many options as larger cities like Riyadh or Jeddah, so you may need to travel for certain appointments or for the delivery. Understand the cultural norms and customs around childbirth in Saudi Arabia. For example, it's common for only women to be present during the birth, so male partners may not be allowed in the delivery room. Learn some basic Arabic phrases related to pregnancy and childbirth. While many doctors and nurses in Saudi Arabia speak English, not all hospital staff may be fluent. Ensure that you're aware of the legal requirements for having a baby in Saudi Arabia. For example, you'll need to register the birth with both the Saudi authorities and your home country's embassy to ensure your child has the correct citizenship and documentation. Consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during the birth. Finally, connect with other expats who have had babies in Saudi Arabia. They can provide valuable advice and support, and may be able to recommend specific doctors or hospitals," said another expat in Al Ula, Saudi Arabia.
