What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Palma de Mallorca?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Palma de Mallorca if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Palma de Mallorca, it's important to respect the local language, which is Catalan, even though Spanish is also widely spoken. Attempting to speak a few words in Catalan can be appreciated. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as the bullfighting debate or the Catalan independence movement, as these can lead to heated discussions. It's considered rude to interrupt someone while they're speaking, so always wait your turn in conversations. Spaniards value their personal space, so avoid standing too close to someone or touching them unless you know them well. In Spain, it's customary to greet with two kisses on the cheek, starting with the right. However, this is usually between people who know each other well, so don't do it with strangers or in formal settings. Punctuality is not as strict in Spain as in other countries. However, if you're invited to someone's home, it's polite to arrive on time. Tipping is not mandatory in Spain, but it's customary to leave a small amount if you're satisfied with the service. Avoid wearing beachwear in the city or in restaurants, as it's considered inappropriate. Remember that siesta time, usually between 2pm and 5pm, is taken seriously in Spain. Many shops close during this time and noise should be kept to a minimum. Lastly, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions, especially during festivals and religious events," remarked another expat in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
