What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Palm Jumeirah?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Palm Jumeirah if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Palm Jumeirah, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions. Public displays of affection are frowned upon, so avoid kissing, hugging, or holding hands in public. Dress modestly, especially in public places like shopping malls or restaurants. Women should cover their shoulders and knees, and men should avoid wearing shorts or sleeveless shirts. Alcohol consumption is allowed in licensed venues, but public intoxication and drinking and driving are strictly prohibited. It's also illegal to carry alcohol in public places, even if it's unopened. Avoid using offensive language or making disrespectful comments about the UAE government, the royal family, or the local culture and traditions. This can lead to fines or imprisonment. During the holy month of Ramadan, eating, drinking, and smoking in public during daylight hours is considered disrespectful. Even if you're not fasting, you should refrain from these activities in public. Photography is a sensitive issue in the UAE. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially women and children. It's also illegal to take photos of certain government buildings and military installations. Lastly, homosexuality is illegal in the UAE, and public displays of same-sex affection can lead to fines or imprisonment. It's important to be aware of these laws and respect the local customs and traditions," remarked another expat in Palm Jumeirah, the UAE.
