What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Caracas?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Caracas if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"When visiting Caracas, avoid wearing revealing clothing, as it may be considered disrespectful. Refrain from discussing politics, as it is a sensitive topic and can lead to heated debates. Do not take photographs of military or government buildings, as it is prohibited and can lead to trouble with authorities. Avoid making negative comments about the country or its people, as Venezuelans are proud of their culture and heritage. Be punctual for social events, but be prepared for locals to arrive late, as it is common in Venezuelan culture. Do not use your left hand to give or receive items, as it is considered impolite. Avoid using the "OK" hand gesture, as it may be interpreted as an offensive symbol. Finally, be cautious when discussing religion, as it is an important aspect of Venezuelan culture and should be treated with respect," remarked another expat in Caracas, Venezuela.
